Ter gelegenheid van de internationale Right To Know Day wordt op 28 september 2011 een bijzondere conferentie georganiseerd. Tijdens het evenement wordt de toegang tot overheidsinformatie zowel praktisch als juridisch geduid. De dreigende inperking van de Wet openbaarheid van bestuur (Wob) alsmede problemen worden besproken, waarbij het zoeken naar oplossingen centraal staat.
Het programma is rijkelijk gevuld met allerhande personen uit de praktijk en wetenschap. Naast wetenschappers, journalisten, gebruikers en topjuristen, zullen ook de Nationale Ombudsman, de Landsadvocaat en diverse politici hun opwachting maken. Er is ruime gelegenheid voor debat met de zaal om daadwerkelijk pijnpunten te inventariseren en lering te trekken uit de praktijk. Dit helpt niet alleen de kennis te verhogen, maar moet uitmonden in conclusies die een toegevoegde waarde hebben bij het debat over het al dan niet aanpassen van de Wob.
De Right To Know Day wordt ieder jaar op 28 september in veel landen georganiseerd om stil te staan bij het belang bij de toegang tot informatie. In Nederland werd de dag vorig jaar voor het eerst georganiseerd door onderzoeksjournalist Brenno de Winter. Voor de editie van dit jaar is de samenwerking gezocht met de vakgroep Bestuursrecht & Bestuurskunde van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen om de dag gezamenlijk op te pakken. De dag wordt verder ondersteund door de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten, het Persvrijheidsfonds, de Belgisch-Nederlandse Vereniging van Onderzoeksjournalisten (VVOJ), Stichting Vrijschrift en Stichting ‘Dat Zou Jij Wel Willen Weten’.
De datum voor de bijeenkomst is gelukkig, omdat de Commissie Binnenlandse Zaken in de Tweede Kamer op 29 september een hoorzitting organiseert waar veel van de sprekers bevraagd zullen worden over hun ervaring met de Wob.
Deelname kost €75 inclusief BTW en dekt de kosten. Voor studenten ligt de prijs op €12,50 inclusief BTW. De dag is nadrukkelijk niet bedoeld voor het maken van winst. Overgebleven geld zal worden ingezet voor projecten die nieuwsgaring en de toegang tot informatie versterken. Dit zal door Stichting Vrijschrift worden beheerd.
